  • N.C. State Fair launches site for 2009

The PR peeps behind the N.C. State Fair have done an awesome job embracing the social Web in the past year. So I have to give them a shout out for their website, which has been revamped for the 2009 state fair. This year’s theme is “A Whole Lotta Happy.” Take a look:

  • Town of Chapel Hill launches new website

Local governments don’t often revamp their websites, so when I found out the Town of Chapel Hill had it’s site redesigned, I thought I’d point it out. I don’t know what their last site looked like. If you do, tell me if the new one is better.

  • Please don’t ever say: “Let’s make a viral video”

I love this post by Jeremy at Cary-based Ignite Social Media. He says “getting something to go viral is like trying to bathe a cat in ice water. It might happen, but it isn’t likely.” Instead, he says if you’re thinking about making a video, you’ve got to make it funny, or at least entertaining:

  • 14 things you might not know about WordPress

A bunch of Triangle WordPress users gathered for for WordCampRDU this weekend, an event where they could talk about the blogging platform and even meet its co-founder. Wayne Sutton spent some time with WP co-founder Matt Mellenweg and put together this post:

  • Local single mom creates website to help find Mr. Right

Single Raleigh mom Beth has started a website dedicated to finding Mr. Right and chronicling her efforts. If you’ve ever tried Match.com or other dating sites to find someone, then you must take a look at her site because it’s so funny. And if you know of any single men, send her site their way.

  • Local LinkedIn guru publishes book

One of my tweeps recently published a book, and since he’s known for organizing huge LinkedIn meetups in the Triangle, I thought he deserved some recognition. Raleigh resident Chuck Hester’s new book is called “Linking In to Pay It Forward,” perhaps it will help you look at social media in a different way.

  • The pitfalls of making your Twitter account private

Blogger and vlogger Taylor Barr recently wrote about whether it makes sense to make your Twitter account private, particularly if it started out public. He has some pretty strong feelings about the topic and so do some of his commenters.

  • Tonight’s Triangle Tweetup should feature biggest turnout yet

Tonight is the Triangle Tweetup. It’s a chance for locals on Twitter to get together and socialize and also help the community (we’re collecting toiletries for a local shelter).  It’s amazing how much the Tweetups have grown since Wayne Sutton began organizing them in winter 2006.

  • Time to register for BarCampRDU

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for BarCampRDU. I’ve been to a couple of BarCamps now, and they’re free, which is a bonus. The event has nothing to do with drinking. Instead, it’s an unconference centered on the Web, technology, community building, etc. Here’s how to sign up:

  • Have you used Twitter in 101 ways yet?

If you’re a Twitter feen and you need a little diversion from your day, head over to Durham blogger Jeff Cohen’s newly revamped site and see how many of the 101 Uses for Twitter you’ve actually done. He created the list with Kipp Bodnar. I’ve done 63.
