Politics & Govt.

  • Local bloggers feeling the effects of endorsement rules

Although new rules issued by the Federal Trade Commission do not go into effect until Dec. 10, blogger Karen Mann has already issued a statement declaring she often receives music for free. The rules require bloggers who review products to provide full disclosure of any connections with advertisers.

  • Watch dozens of local political candidates tell you why they’re the best

There are a slew of municipal elections coming up Oct. 6 and Nov. 3. Some of my coworkers at NBC17 took the time to invite school board and mayoral candidates from Durham, Wake, Orange, Johnston, Cumberland and Chatham counties. You can find your candidates and watch their short videos here:

  • Take a look at Raleigh Mayor Meeker’s campaign finance report

The Raleigh Public Record continues to do our community a service by obtaining and publishing campaign finance reports for local candidates. In this post, they highlight Mayor Meeker’s report, which includes details on the $38,000 he’s raised.

  • Weighing in on Van Jones

President Obama has his hands full this week with controversy about his school speech, Congress returning to deal with health care and the termination of one of his advisors. Durham blogger NewBlackMan gives us his two cents on the Van Jones controversy:

  • Two Triangle men have two different opinions about Obama’s student address

On Friday I asked @MyNC’s Twitter followers what they thought about President Obama’s plan to address students in the classroom. I loved that 2 Triangle followers blogged about their very different opinions. There’s Joe, a Raleigh resident who thinks it’s a good idea and then Cary resident Mike, who wrote this:

  • Here’s how you can get political in Raleigh

The Raleigh Public Record has compiled a clean list of candidate forums scheduled at 101 Lounge + Cafe. Looks like a good chance to get some face time with candidates for Raleigh city council and mayor. Click the link for all the details:

  • If you can’t raise money for your city council campaign, should you still run?

The Indy’s Bob Geary went down to the Board of Elections office to review the campaign finance reports of the candidates for Raleigh City Council. He was surprised by what he found. Several candidates missed the filing deadline, others had barely raised a penny:

  • Does article help little-known candidate?

The Indy has a lengthy article about Lee Sartain, a 28-year-old candidate for Raleigh City Council, that explores his campaign (the good and the bad). It seems to me that the article wouldn’t help his campaign, but several commenters say it has swayed them toward Sartain. Decide for yourself:

  • What does Wikipedia say about Gov. Bev Perdue?

Ouch. Poor Bev Perdue. Someone edited the governor’s Wikipedia page in an unflattering way (writing things that have since been removed). I’m not going to repeat them here, but the blog Take the Bull by the Horns has the details:

  • Good debate brewing over Sarah Palin poll results

Triangle-based Public Policy Polling recently published poll results that show that polled  “birthers” (those who question President Obama’s citizenship) prefer Sarah Palin as the 2012 candidate for president. But the PPP blog got quite a few e-mails & comments showing Palin supporters riled up:
