  • The media isn’t invited to cover Kay Hagan’s after-party

U.S. Sen.-elect Kay Hagan will be sworn into office today. But don’t expect to find the local media at the open house after the ceremony. She didn’t invite them, the N&O reports.

  • Who will run for Durham’s mayoral seat in 2009?

Durham Mayor Bill Bell is up for re-election this year, and it’s unclear whether he’ll seek his fifth term. Other potential candidates are council members Cora Cole-McFadden and Mike Woodard and former councilman Frank Hyman, but would they have a chance if Bell runs again? Bull City Rising has an in-depth analysis.

  • An Open Letter to Those Opposed to LGBT Marriage

I find most gay rights/anti-gay rights arguments vitriolic and harsh, but this piece struck me pretty hard.  The authenticity of this open letter from a gay Christian to other Chrisitans is really moving, and I wanted to share.

  • DATA to go fare-free?

Dependable Erection has stuff on the Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) driving towards a fare-free system.  Surprisingly and controversally, the blog post argues that this is a bad idea.  What do you think?

  • Mapping Candidates’ Campaign Contributions

All you data-heads will appreciate that Andrew Dunn has posted a fascinating series of maps and graphs (using free apps!) showing where the top NC campaign contributions for the 2008 Perdue and McCrory campaigns came from. I just think that’s kinda cool.

  • Durham to lose top city official

One of the top leaders in Durham city government is reportedly leaving the Bull City. Economic development director Alan DeLisle is leaving for Louisville, Bull City Rising reports. DeLisle is responsible, in part, for bringing the Durham Performing Arts Center to downtown Durham.

Governor-elect Bev Perdue is preparing to move into the governor’s sweet digs. Perdue has put her Chapel Hill home on the market for $2.7 million. The N&O has details about the home she’s selling and mansion she’s moving into.

  • Difficulties and Hope for Migrant Workers

As we enjoy our holiday meals, it’s important to remember those who moved our meal from plant to plate. The Institute for Southern Studies (based out of Durham) has a very interesting post on a grassroots organization that is working with businesses to fight for “fair food”.

  • Durham Gets Non-Emergency 911 Number

When I was a kid I dialed 911 just to talk to the operator. A cop came to chastise my parents and they were about as pleased as you would expect. Ever since I’ve been very nervous about those three digits, but Dependable Erection’s PSA shares a new option.

  • Do you know anyone who said this a few weeks ago? I’m leaving the country if…

It looks like Stephen Baldwin was just pulling our leg. According to Hugh’s Notebook Stephen said he was only kidding when about to leaving the country if Barack Obama was elected. I heard this from a few people & they’re still in the U.S.A. Do you know anyone who said the same?
