  • Here’s how to throw a back to school party for your kiddies

Triangle blogger Wendy has some solid tips for how to throw a back-to-school party for your kids. Her tips include incorporating a school supply drive into the event, and of course, cute cupcakes. Details on her blog:

  • UNC Journalism School gets new website, new curriculum

The UNC Journalism School website received a redesign, and the results are clean and simple. The new site features social media integration, links to professor blogs and a section dedicated to the schools new curriculum for the 2009 academic year. See it here:

  • Board games aren’t boring

I love board games. I’ll take you on in Parchesi, Sorry, Battleship, Life … the list goes on. My sister and I still get really competitive over Scrabble — though these days we play on Facebook. But now you can take your clever board game idea and make it reality. This appears to be geared toward teachers, but hey, [...]

  • Duke puts vintage commercials on iTunes

I love watching old commercials. It’s fascinating to see how our society has changed and how technology has changed through these 30 second blurbs. Now Duke University is making it easier to watch them. The school’s special collections library put over 1,500 on iTunes.

  • An intriguing piece of paper

Aside from keeping our planet clean, picking up pieces of paper on the street apparently leads to amusement. A Complete Bunch of Pants got a good laugh out of this intriguing letter about attending community college. Just FYI: Adult content.

  • Soon you’ll be able to review retro billboards online

I think it would be so neat to go back and look at all the old billboards that dotted American roads. That’s why I’m so excited about a grant Duke recently received to digitize all the old images of billboards it has. There’s already a searchable database, but no images yet.

  • State Republicans want kids to skip school today

Typically kids have Memorial Day off of school, but not in Wake County. Students at year-round schools have classes today thanks to the way the school board scheduled the school year. The N&O explains why and has an excerpt from a GOP press release:

  • Local blogger doesn’t have a very promising message for graduates

This open letter to college graduates written by a local blogger is sad, but true. Here’s an excerpt:

  • UNC students stage flash mob in Davis Library

This video definitely makes me want to be in college again. UNC students staged a flash mob at Davis Library yesterday. More than 3,000 students danced and body surfed, all while sporting glow sticks. It’s pretty incredible that they pulled this off:

  • Some Wake County students may have to go to year-round schools against their will

The North Carolina Supreme Court ruled today that the Wake County School District can assign students to year-round schools, even if their parents say they would prefer thier kids to stay in a traditional school (where kids get 3 months summer break). Do you think it’s fair for school officials to decide?
