Durham

  • Random dancer takes over Durham’s Brightleaf Square

You’ve got to check out this video of an ADF dancer  who recently went to Durham’s Brightleaf Square and just started dancing. He did moves directly behind passers-by, who either pretended not to notice (I guess b/c if that were me, you can bet I would be watching)….

  • A list of things to do in the Triangle for the Fourth of July

If you’re spending the Fourth of July in the Triangle, you’re lucky because there are plenty of ways to celebrate. I’ve compiled a list of my suggestions and some other ideas. Here’s one of them:

  • Bear spotted and killed in Durham

Several Durham residents reported seeing a bear wandering the Bull City. The bear (presumably the same one, but you never know) was later found dead on the side of I-85 after apparently being hit by a semi (thanks for the details & correction @MiracleMan) . You can see photos of the black bear here:

  • Soon you’ll be able to review retro billboards online

I think it would be so neat to go back and look at all the old billboards that dotted American roads. That’s why I’m so excited about a grant Duke recently received to digitize all the old images of billboards it has. There’s already a searchable database, but no images yet.

  • New website helps Durham residents track crime

A Durham man has created a website aimed at helping residents keep a better eye on crime in their neighborhood. The site is called Neighborhood Protector and it’s not much to look at, but it does appear easy to search for recent crimes in your neighborhood and post community events.

  • Listen to the army band

It’s almost time to put together that list of July 4 activities. If you’re looking for something patriotic to do, you can check out the 208th Army band in Durham’s CCB plaza, compliments of the Durham County library.

  • Save Bronto campaign hosts first fundraiser

I’m still not clear on why the teens caught vandalizing the Bronto head at the N.C. Museum of Life and Science in Durham aren’t responsible for paying for its repair. But whatever, at least the cool dino is getting fixed. The first fundraiser to repair the decapitation was held this weekend:

  • Lineup announced for Festival for the Eno

The Festival for the Eno is always a lot of fun. If it’s too hot, you can wander away from the stages and crafts and dip your toes in the Eno River. The music is always good, and this year’s acts have just been announced. Jake at the MyNC Music blog has the full lineup:

  • One of the coolest Google maps ever created for Durham

Endangered Durham blogger Gary has updated his Google map showing the historic and current photos of downtown Durham homes and businesses, including links to blog posts about the location. You truly have to look at it to see how neat this is:

  • Durham bus riders won’t want to board the bus at this stop

Durham blogger Barry recently took a survey of the Avondale Drive area with some other folks from the neighborhood to let the city know what issues need to be addressed. He blogged about one of the problems: A bus stop that is not inviting at all. Poison ivy, no place to stand and wrong signage:
