THREADS

  • Indie Pop meets Hip-Hop in battle of the bands

This one came out of left field today. The Love Language will take on The Foreign Exchange in a battle of the bands sponsored by Red Bull at Hibernian off Glenwood. The two bands will compete in four battles, including a covers face-off.

  • The Beast bridges racial divides

The original concept of hip-hop as the voice of a progressive culture has been largely lost, but The Beast is a band that is giving the genre back its voice. Frontman Pierce Freelon explains the significance of The Beast’s promotional materials, artwork and composition.

  • Things get hairy (and sweaty) at The Pour House

I missed Monotonix at The Pour House Thursday night. And while it may have been a truly face-melting experience, I really feel like I dodged the bullet that is sweaty, chest hair crowd surfing. Perhaps next time …

  • Missed the ‘Hear Here’ finale? Here’s a photo slideshow

I had full intention of attending the “Hear Here” show this past Saturday at the Pour House. I knew U2 would be done around 11:30, which would give me enough time to at least catch The Love Language close out the show. Unfortunately, I got hung up in THE traffic.

  • Post-U2 turf coming together nicely

After standing in front of the largest concert stage ever constructed in one of the most exciting venues in college football, I had doubts Live Nation could completely rip out the turf and replace it before the next weekend’s game. Well the deadline is fast approaching and the outlook is good.

  • Outdoor ice rink coming to Downtown Raleigh this Christmas

I am so excited about this! As much as I love Raleigh, it never quite feels like Christmas. Sure we have the phenomenal A Christmas Carol production, and the City of Raleigh does a fine job decorating light poles. But a 4,000 sq ft ice rink will really make Downtown a winter wonderland.

  • Local bloggers feeling the effects of endorsement rules

Although new rules issued by the Federal Trade Commission do not go into effect until Dec. 10, blogger Karen Mann has already issued a statement declaring she often receives music for free. The rules require bloggers who review products to provide full disclosure of any connections with advertisers.

  • Cherry Bounce v2.0 upgrades festival to 7 stages

This year’s Cherry Bounce Festival will feature more than 20 bands spanning seven stages and seven nights. The alternative music festival will kickoff at Deep South and continue at Raleigh Times, Slim’s, Busy Bee, Tir Na Nog, Berkeley Cafe and finally on the mainstage on Hargett Street.

  • The Love Language scores Merge Records deal

By far one of my favorite local acts, The Love Language has signed with Durham-based Merge Records. This news has been swirling around for a while now, but it’s officially official. So congrats to them … now let’s hear that new album!

  • Urban Decay

Flickr user IFGD captured this photo of a house that hasn’t quite been met with Raleigh’s revitalization plan. A little love will go a long way with this one
