Michael Jackson’s memorial celebration in Raleigh loses thousands of dollars

The Michael Jackson memorial celebration at Raleigh’s Convention Center drew between 200 and 450 people, depending on which media outlet you quote. But with a $5 admission, the organizer was not even close to recouping the $24k he spent to host the memorial downtown.

admin

“He paid $24,495,” said Roger Krupa, director of the convention center. Krupa brandished a photocopy of the check from the Martin Luther King Celebration Committee, which Lightner co-founded in 1982. “Oh, and 25 cents.”

As the Raleigh high school hip-hop duo Certified Ladies danced on a stage raised at one end of the 100,000-square-foot Exhibit Halls A and B, Lightner frowned at those numbers. “I’m $18,000 in the hole,” he said, offering what seems to be a conservative estimate, considering the facility fee and the rental of four large projection screens spread throughout the hall were offset only by the sale of a few hundred tickets at $5 each.

ugh, who patted him on tha back and said, “yeah, you should spend $24K, I think that’s a great idea.”

Note to self: Always run ideas past someone skeptical.

Wow, Phil, you just made me lol. I love your suggestion of running ideas past someone skeptical. On the contrary, I think a lot of us intentionally don’t do that because we don’t want someone to criticize our plans.

I was at the memorial, and it was definitely a neat event to have happening simultaneously in Raleigh. That said, I don’t understand why a smaller venue couldn’t have been used. Say Vintage 21 or Lincoln Theater, or even Moore Square. Definitely would have saved some money.
