Soon you’ll be able to review retro billboards online

I think it would be so neat to go back and look at all the old billboards that dotted American roads. That’s why I’m so excited about a grant Duke recently received to digitize all the old images of billboards it has. There’s already a searchable database, but no images yet.

American outdoor advertising dates back to the 1830s, when huge outdoor posters were printed for the traveling circus. In the beginning, roadside advertising was generally local. Merchants painted signs or glued posters on walls and fences to notify passersby that their establishments up the road sold horse blankets or rheumatism pills.

The center’s images, which date from the 1920s through the 1990s, are an eclectic mix of standard consumer come-ons — an advertisement, say, for Pillsbury’s Best Flour — to political statements, such as the 1980 sign during the Iranian Islamic revolution that asked Americans, “Have You Thought of the Hostages Today?”
