American Tobacco Trail not yet suitable for all riders

Have you ever tried to ride the length of the 22-mile American Tobacco Trail? Indy photographer Jeremy M. Lange did and documented his results in words and photos. Turns out, it’s not as easy as you would expect:

admin

All was fine for the first seven miles, a beautiful, flat, tree-lined route, passing creeks and swamps. Then I hit the Chatham County line, where I was rebuffed by large signs declaring the trails closed for construction. Figuring it was minor grading, and having no other way to get back to Durham, I went around the sign and down the perfectly fine trail for another mile or so. Then I got to the bridge, or what will be the first of two bridges that will replace the old train trestles spanning the creek. But there was neither a trestle to tip toe across nor a bridge to walk on. There was no note of this problem on my map, and the projected completion date, according to a 2007 News & Observer story, was late 2008. The only option to reconnect with the ATT was a 6.5 mile-jaunt along N.C. 751 to The Streets at Southpoint, through its parking lot, and over Interstate 40 on Fayetteville Road.

You know what. I’m extremely disappointed with you, Ginny. This story is not worth linking to at all. The writer obviously knows nothing at all about the ATT and just decided to trash it. The Chatham county bridges have never been opened since the ATT opened. They’re being built right now and should be done by this summer but this guy fails basic comprehension. This story is *NOT* linkworthy.

Sorry that you feel that way, Tanner. I think his point wasn’t to trash the trail so much as to trash the trail as to encourage folks who are working on it to make a more public notification of the status of construction.

If you Google “American Tobacco Trail” there’s not a solid website that comprehensively explains how to access the trail on the first page results. Just some PDFs and a hodge podge of information.

I think the author’s point was that with all the touting local officials do about the trail, you would think there would be a more comprehensive guide out there.

I tried to take a ride on the trail with my boyfriend a few weeks ago, and after sifting through the Google results and Web 0.5 websites dedicated to the trail, we opted to go on the N.C. Art Museum Trail. Perhaps we would have stuck with the ATT trail if there was a better resource out there explaining in clear detail what’s open, what’s not, where to park, what to see.

If what he is trying to say is that it needs a website, then he should simply say that. There are plenty of places to get information about the ATT and Bill Busey has been at pretty much every single area festival promoting the trail and what’s happening to it. It’s simply shoddy journalism that he didn’t bother to do even basic research about it.
