As a former print journalist, I’ve been following the discussion of the future of newspapers with great interest. I’m pleased to see Carrboro blogger Jock take a more optimistic viewpoint on the situation than most.

So take a deep breath and allow me this summer to take you beyond the beltways, off the interstates and out onto our state’s “blue highways” where we boast at least 190 smaller newspapers, including about 140 weeklies — many of which are still independently owned, or at least owned by small groups which could hardly be called a “chain” in the sense of a company the size of a McClatchy or a Gannett.

(Former student plug alert!) You should check out more of Jock’s community journalism research — he has provided some excellent analysis on a major part of the changing-daily newspaper industry. This is another great example.
