Bill would make it easier to get public records, recover legal fees

If you’ve ever tried to request public records from the government, you know it’s easy to get screwed out of a document you legally have the right to. But NC lawmakers are considering a bill that would perhaps make it easier for folks to get their hands on public records.

A person who has to sue to obtain public records would have an easier time recovering attorney’s fees under a bill filed in the state House.

The bill, filed Monday, would provide for the automatic recovery of legal fees in cases that are won convincingly. The bill establishes a unit in the state Department of Justice to keep public records disputes out of court in the first place.
