A plan to install free outdoor Wi-Fi around Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh is drawing some criticism from folks who say the city spends too much money downtown. The criticism doesn’t seem to be slowing down the plan though, according to the N&O.

Councilman Philip Isley said he agrees that Wi-Fi is a great benefit to offer downtown visitors. What he has problems with is the timing of the project.
“For us to start putting money into that right now when we’re trying to pinch pennies, I’m just not sure that’s the smartest thing to do,” he said.
Raleigh has set aside up to $180,000 for the installation of the Wi-Fi network. The city expects to pay $15,000 to $20,000 annually for maintenance once the network is up and running.

I’m biased of course but the plan for wifi has been in place for years. This is just following through with that plan.
Also, there is so much more infrastructure to pay for in North Raleigh then downtown. If free wifi helps downtown do well then that means more money from taxes to pay for those roads in the rest of the city.

Since consumer spending makes up about two thirds of our economy, the only way to jump start our economy is for the general public to begin spending again. Our city needs to be willing to spend money now to improve our future. By taking the lead I hope this will in turn help to improve our consumer confidence so we all start spending again! To draw tourists dollars into Raleigh we need to add perks like free wi-fi!
