Free fares on Raleigh’s buses is among several suggestions N&O columnist Ruth Sheehan has for boosting ridership. Would free fare help convince you to ride the bus more?

But consider what happened when Chapel Hill-Carrboro went to free fare: Ridership tripled. Now, granted, Chapel Hill’s a different kind of town from Raleigh. The university is not only home to more than 20,000 students, it’s also the town’s biggest employer. The university also chipped in a sum to offset much of the town’s loss at the farebox. But Raleigh has several big employers I can think of, too. Ditto for the Research Triangle Park. We already subsidize more than 80 percent of the cost of running buses. Durham’s considering a move to free fares; Raleigh should, too.

It could help. I rode the bus before I could ride it for free, but I rode it a lot more after I started getting free bus service through work. But there’s also a large segment of the population who could be riding, and it’s not the cost that keeps them off the bus. I ride for free, and out of about 30 people in my office, only two others ride the bus. There are other issues to solve to get people on the bus, but free fares wouldn’t hurt.
