  • Durham pastor explains frustrations with the black church

Durham pastor Carl Kenney doesn’t mince words when he explains his frustrations w/ “the state of the Black church in Durham.” He explains why he didn’t attend a citywide revival & why he’s having a harder time aligning himself with some who say they’re Christian. An interesting read, even if you’re not religious.

  • Hungry horses found eating dirt and bark in southern Wake County

A person driving past a pasture in southern Wake County alerted authorities about seven horses that seemed to be starving. Turns out they were living on sticks and dirt. Now a local animal welfare group wants to take custody of them. The decision is in the court’s hands.

  • State Farmers Market Restaurant closing for repairs

I have yet to try a meal at the State Farmers Market Restaurant, but I’ve heard they serve a tasty brunch. Looks like I won’t have a chance to try it until after March 7. WRAL reports the restaurant is temporarily closing for repairs. Some vendors at the market worry it could hurt business.

Everything entered in an upcoming fashion show (including evening wear) must be made of 75 to 100 percent cotton.

Some shows at Koka Booth Amphitheatre will soon be booked by a new company, the N&O reports. That means the types of shows that are performed there could change. The new booking agency is called Outback Concerts.

  • What would you do if your neighbor’s dog wouldn’t stop barking?

Durham resident Barry has been dealing with an obnoxious neighborhood dog. It seems the poor pup is left outside all day and night and it barks constantly, and Barry has proof. He recorded the dog between 9 and 10 p.m. last night and posted the sounds on his blog.

  • Durham students don’t have to go to school on inauguration day

Turns out students Durham public school won’t have to attend class on inauguration day, but it’s not because the school district is promoting politics. Turns out district officials scheduled Jan. 20 as a teacher workday when the calendar was set two years ago.

  • Local architect recognized by the Wall Street Journal for sustainable design

Raleigh architect Frank Durham recently received the type of recognition that I imagine makes most architects drool. One of the homes Frank built (a sustainable vacation home in the Bahamas) was included in a Wall Street Journal list of “the most influential and inspiring houses built during the past decade.”
