A day in the life of a Chapel Hill parking enforcer

Imagine having a job where you’re verbally abused every day (um… well… maybe you don’t have to imagine). It’s something the parking enforcement officers in Chapel Hill have become accustomed to, including moonings and cursing. Only catch is you have to register w/ the Herald-Sun to read this awesome feature:

admin

Chapel Hill residents know her uniform well — the gray button-down shirt, the black hat that reads “Parking Enforcement Officer” and the handheld ticketing device. When she begins her slow drive down Franklin Street each morning, patrons eating breakfast know she’s on the way. “I drive by once to let everybody know I’m coming, to warn them. But I’ve been known to give tickets at 8:01 a.m.,” Sanders said with a smile.

I just saw this, and have to share a story about the parking enforcement officers. It was actually last Christmas, and my wife asked my to run over to Sandwhich to pick something up for a last minute gift for a friend. I parked on Roberson St, and didn’t have any change for the meter. I took a chance and darted in and was back out in only a few minutes.

There was already an office standing by my car, ticket book in my hand. He asked me if I wanted a parking ticket. Naturally, I told him I really didn’t want one, but I also said it in a polite manner. He then said: “The I won’t write you one! Merry Christmas”. And off he went towards Franklin St!

@John That’s pretty incredible. I guess he was in the Christmas spirit.
