When I lived in South Carolina, I once went coon hunting. It’s an actual sport, where dogs chase coons up a tree, then hunters follow the dogs’ howls to find the coon. And I grew up in rural Illinois, so I’ve seen plenty of raccoons. But Raleigh resident Brandy just saw her first.

I have never ever seen a raccoon until tonight. A guy puts out cat food for the street cats inbetween our property and the bar next door. Well I was taking out the trash and Tom tells me there is a cat eating. As I get closer, I see its hunched over too weird to be a cat. He stops, watches me, climbs up the tree and just watches what I’m doing. I start putting the cardboards in the bin and he goes back to what he was eating. I decided to get closer and take pictures.

For the record I did not kill any raccoons, nor did I witness any being killed. I was on assignment for the newspaper when I went coon hunting … it was a competition, so they were only counting the coons they could tree.

I thought it was so strange he didn’t seem to have much fear of Tom and I. Tom was surprised I never seen one. I’ve seen the usual, possum, squirrel, fox, rat/(city)mouse, deer..but only saw raccoon on tv.
Thanks for the highlight!! ^_^
