Has downtown Durham changed since 1976?

This is incredible. Gary, the blogger behind Endangered Durham, dug up this editorial that was published in The Herald-Sun in July 1976. It’s amazing how many of the questions/points the editorial poses about urban renewal still ring true today:

Ginny Skalski

Will it become more than a business center that closes down at night and on the weekends? Will people come downtown for other purposes than to work or to pay a tax bill, register to vote, open a bank account? The answers to those questions depends [sic] on the attitude of Durham's voters, on the vigor of city officials in pressing for continuing downtown revitalization and on the willingness of private interests to invest in downtown Durham.

Interesting, I’ve seen downtown Durham change a lot over the years. My grandmother lived since the 40’s on East Main St until the mid 90s. I now work at ATC, during my day job. I’ve never really had any problem in downtown. Although, just driving through parts with other people, I’ve seen friends go, “You drive though here? Are you nuts?!?”

I don’t know if there is really a way to calm folks fears about the area. I know I’ve gone to hang out in ATC after work or gone home and come back to Tyler’s or Mellow Mushroom.

What interests me is, from your article it seems they’ve been working on this for 30+ years now, does that make it a lost cause at this point?
