A sad day for journalism: Investigative reporter Pat Stith is leaving The News and Observer

Bad bureaucrats around the state are probably exhaling a collective sigh of relief. That’s because N&O Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Pat Stith is retiring after 37 years with the paper. You must read this article to understand how big of a loss Stith’s retirement is to journalism and our community.

Ginny Skalski

There's little Stith hates more than waste, an obsession that colored his habits in and out of the newsroom. Stith saves chewed gum for another chew later. He eats the cores of his apples. He has driven government surplus cars until they fell apart. Stith never even bothered to fix their air conditioners, satisfied to strip down to his undershirt on rides out to interviews to avoid sweat stains. He swears $6 is getting pretty steep for a plate at the K&S Cafeteria, where he and his wife Donna often meet for dinner now that their three boys are grown and out of the house.
