News and Observer offers buyouts to entire newsroom

Today is another sad day in the N&O newsroom. Buyouts were offered to 320 employees, including the entire newsroom staff, the Triangle Business Journal reports. The publisher says he doesn’t expect many newsroom staff to take the buyouts. If enough buyouts aren’t taken, more layoffs could be coming.

The newspaper also plans to cut newsprint costs. Starting in early October, the Travel section will be combined on Sunday with Arts & Living. The Friday “What’s Up” entertainment tab will be folded into the features section, and the Channels television guide will be changed into a 16-page tabloid publication.

Woah, they’re ending the entertainment tab? What is going on here?

@Andrea I don’t think losing the entertainment tab is that big of a loss. To be honest, I subscribe to the print edition and I can’t remember the last time I actually looked at the tab. It must be buried among the advertisements or hiding behind sports (which I never look at). Besides, the Indy has a pretty firm lock down on the entertainment market here. Who really turns to the N&O for entertainment news?

@Ginny I’m sure what you said is precisely why they’re dropping it. Which sucks from my viewpoint since I work on the entertainment tab at my paper. Now I wonder how many people turn to alternate sources for their entertainment news instead of our tab. sigh.

@Andrea Sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up a sore subject. On the bright side, I’m sure your entertainment tab is much better than the N&O’s.
