Are large trees a good fit for downtown Raleigh?

Who would have guessed a row of trees would be problem in Raleigh (the City of Oaks)? But apparently the “Highbeam overcup oak trees” on Fayetteville Street are going to grow too tall and wide for the former downtown pedestrian mall, possibly obstructing views. Is this really a problem?

They look pretty when they're small, and they soften the commercial canyon of concrete, asphalt, stone and glass. But those trees are going to get tall, brother. And wide, mother. So much for our multi-million-dollar vista, sistah. We had trees there before, and that was part of the problem.

i suggest fake trees like the cell tower on I-40/harrison avenue!

nothing but beautiful, tiny, unobstructive, fake trees. the city can water them with cans of air! they will grow all-year round, but not at all! birds will build nests in them, yet wonder, “wtf is this ikea tree?” those nests will also be made of plastic shavings, which they will gather by picking up fallen plastic branches, which will not exist because they are plastic and will not break.

this will eventually lead to fewer birds, and you guessed it, less bird poop…the reduction in disease will make us healthier, which will allow us to enjoy the plastic trees for many more years, although our lives will be drastically cut short from breathing the fumes associated with the plastic.

this is clearly a win-win option. circle of life!

Oh, yes. Plastic trees are a brilliant idea. Dogs owners will love them. You can just carry a squeegee with you when you walk your pup. When poochie pees, all you have to do is wipe it up.

Also, there would be fewer bugs and cicadas, which means less noise during hot summers.

We should start a website: raleighplastictrees.com
