Raleigh blogger John was recently told by his financial advisor that at the age of 50 he is pretty much financially independent. Basically meaning he doesn’t need to make any more money to live comfortably for the rest of his life? How did he do it? Well, let’s just say he’s not a big spender.

News and Observer offers buyouts to entire newsroom
Today is another sad day in the N&O newsroom. Buyouts were offered to 320 employees, including the entire newsroom staff, the Triangle Business Journal reports. The publisher says he doesn’t expect many newsroom staff to take the buyouts. If enough buyouts aren’t taken, more layoffs could be coming.

A heartwarming cat reunion
So I was reading the Chicago Tribune a couple weeks ago and saw an article about a Chicago woman who found a cat that a Carrboro family reported missing over a year ago. Some how the kitty made it all the way from Carrboro to the Windy City. Our news desk localized the story.

Are large trees a good fit for downtown Raleigh?
Who would have guessed a row of trees would be problem in Raleigh (the City of Oaks)? But apparently the “Highbeam overcup oak trees” on Fayetteville Street are going to grow too tall and wide for the former downtown pedestrian mall, possibly obstructing views. Is this really a problem?

N.C. State joins the billion-dollar college club
The Raleigh Philosophical Society posted some good news for N.C. State fans despite its recent football struggles. The school passed its original fund raising goal of $600 million and raised $1.37 billion joining a very short list of colleges who have reached the billion dollar mark. Wow!
