Hockey, media, money and the community…Do you support the Canes?

After reading this blog post I just said wow. I’m not a big Hockey fan but I do like having the Carolina Hurricanes here in N.C. I didn’t how much they are involved in the community and I didn’t know some people wanted them out either. Want to know more; then read this Canes Country [...]

admin

Taking everything into consideration mentioned here, you would think that the Hurricanes would be the darlings of the local media, but nothing could be further from the truth. There is one beat writer who focuses on them for the local paper. There are a couple of sports radio stations who give them some love. But for the most part, you don’t seem to hear much about the value of the franchise to the community.

Several publications have consistently listed the Triangle as one of the best places to live in America. I can’t help but think that the Hurricanes help contribute to that.

And we wonder why some outsiders want NHL hockey to fail here and move back up north?

I won’t get into this too deep as I have deep roots to the local Hockey Community.

The Canes being here is a positive thing, helping the area grow and prosper. Chances are, if they canes were not here, I would have considered moving long ago.

I’m a huge hockey fan and the Canes were my introduction to the sport. Their impact on this community has been immeasurable, be it through economic impact, community outreach, and the growth of youth hockey in the area. The greatest thing about supporting the team is that the players are down-to-earth and approachable. These are the typical egotistical athletes you see in many other sports.

Oops, meant to say ‘These are NOT the typical egotistical athletes …’

It’s an over priced money making business. I didn’t realize they needed to be coddled on top of over paid.

@JasonR 1) How are they being coddled? 2) The Canes have made money only once since they’ve been here. But, the owner is rich; he can afford the loss. 3) Have you ever compared the ticket prices to other professional sports?

@TJ The original blog post was about how we and the Media aren’t paying them enough attention.. aren’t caring enough..

As for prices.. Cost for a family of 3 to go see the Durham Bulls play? vs cost of a family of 3 to go see the Cains play?

I much preferred the Minor league hockey experience when it was in Raleigh to the ‘Cains experience.

@JasonR Ok, we can disagree over whether the players/franchise are being paid enough attention. But it’s not really fair to compare the ticket prices of a minor league baseball team to that of an NHL team. It would be more fair to compare them to, say, the cost of a Bobcats game. I, too, wish that minor league hockey was still nearby. :)

It is bit expensive to attend a game, no doubt. Especially when compared to a Bulls game. But in comparison, you are watching the best hockey players in the world when you watch the NHL.

The intent of the article was to give the players and the franchise a bit more recognition for what they do in the community. Like Wayne posted, I don’t think many people are aware of it. But, I don’t think they want to be coddled..*L*

Wayne, thanks for the shout out!
