  • Will Raleigh’s new convention center boost the downtown economy?

When Raleigh’s new $221 million convention center officially opens Friday, it will have a lot of hype to live up to. It was built with the intention of attracting out-of-town visitors to stay overnight, eat in local restaurants and shop here. But will it be successful? Downtown has changed a lot recently.

  • Is Sarah Palin a good vice presidental fit for the McCain ticket?

I usually spend Sunday mornings watching “Meet the Press.” I guess that’s why I’m bringing so many political posts to your attention today. I’m sure we’re going to be hearing a lot about John McCain’s female VP pick in the coming months. Here’s what Raleigh mom Iliana thinks of her:

  • Did John Edwards’ affair ruin his wife’s opportunities?

It’s been about three weeks since John Edwards admitted to having an affair (yes, the media is still talking about this). At first, folks were sympathetic toward his wife, Elizabeth. But now some folks are criticizing her for helping cover up the affair.

  • A football shirt means free chicken

Personally I’m not a big fan of Chick-fil-A chicken strips but I do like football. But if you like both then head over to Chick-fil-A on Monday sporting a team logo and they’ll hand you some strips.

  • How do you feel about making eye contact?

I’m big on eye contact. I always look people in the eye. Unfortunately, from time to time, I think some guys mistake this for flirting. But whatever. I think it’s a little rude not to look people in the eye when you’re chatting. Lesley agrees, saying some in the service industry are lacking eye contact.

  • Is Barack Obama black or white?

When Barack Obama takes the stage tonight to accept the Democratic presidential nomination, undoubtedly there will be more commentary about him being the first African American presidential nominee. But his mom was white, so why doesn’t the media focus on that? Sharon, who is also multiracial, tackles that question.

  • You can’t park here, it’s for gas saving cars only

This camera phone photo of Hybrid only parking at the Mez in Durham has made it way across the web today. I first saw it on twitter from @theRab now it’s on his blog secondary artif@cts.
